These companies will help build South Africa’s expanded power grid

National Transmission Company South Africa has named the contractors that will help “accelerate infrastructure roll-out”.

The Eskom changes will make more than 3GW of transmission capacity available in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape.

It’s going to be an exceptionally “hard” winter for South Africans, Eskom said, with record stage-8 power cuts possible.

Eskom may have to implement stage-8 load shedding this winter if its interventions are not effective.

South Africa will need to build solar and wind plants at a blistering pace – almost nine times faster than it previously has – over the next decade.

About 53GW of new energy generation capacity must be built in the next 10 years to ensure energy security, Eskom said.
