1. How much downtime can the business tolerate?

Estimate the real impact of an outage. Include lost sales, idle staff, missed calls, payment failures and delayed customer service. If the hourly cost is significant, budget for redundancy rather than relying on a single circuit.

2. Is the quoted speed symmetrical?

Download speed is only half the story. Businesses that send cloud backups, upload media, host video meetings or operate off-site CCTV access also need adequate upload capacity. Ask for both download and upload figures.

3. Is it a best-effort or managed business service?

Two services advertised at the same speed can provide very different experiences. Clarify support hours, escalation procedures, monitoring, response targets, repair expectations and whether the router and local network are included in support.

4. What happens when the primary link fails?

A second connection is useful only when failover is configured and tested. The router should detect a genuine loss of internet access, move traffic to the backup path and return safely when the main service recovers. Critical services such as VPNs and voice may require additional planning.

5. Do the two connections share the same risk?

Buying two links does not automatically create true redundancy. They may enter through the same duct, use the same upstream infrastructure or depend on the same power source. Fibre plus fixed wireless can improve diversity because the last-mile paths are physically different.

Is fixed wireless the same as LTE or 5G?

Not necessarily. A fixed wireless service usually uses installed equipment at a known location and a planned connection to provider infrastructure. Mobile LTE or 5G uses a mobile network and may behave differently as signal conditions and cell usage change.

Can fixed wireless be used as the main business connection?

Yes. Where coverage, line of sight and network capacity are suitable, fixed wireless can serve as a primary business connection. The provider should complete a site assessment and recommend the appropriate service.

Does fibre always stay online during load shedding?

No connection should be assumed to remain available without checking its power dependencies. Your router, firewall, switches, Wi-Fi access points and provider-side equipment require power. Will two internet connections guarantee zero downtime?
