The peak occurred three days ago and is the highest number of players for the standalone version of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive since it separated from Counter-Strike 2 earlier this year.

Currently, the game ranks at number 28 on Steam’s list of most played titles. Meanwhile, Counter-Strike 2 remains the most popular game on Steam, with well over a million concurrent players at the time of SteamDB’s latest chart readings.

What Changed After CS’s Standalone Relaunch

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was once merged with Counter-Strike 2, which meant that players launching CS:GO were automatically directed to CS2. Earlier this year, Valve separated the two games and restored Counter-Strike: Global Offensive with its own Steam page.

This change allowed players who preferred the original game to continue playing it as a standalone title. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is no longer searchable through the standard Steam storefront browsing interface.

To install the game, players need the direct link to its Steam page or an invitation from a friend. Despite the difficulty in discovering it, the game has maintained a steadily growing player base since its relaunch. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is currently the 28th most played game on Steam, surpassing titles like:

  • Baldur’s Gate 3,
  • Rainbow Six Siege,
  • Battlefield 6, and several other high-profile releases.

Its peak of 68,000 concurrent players is modest compared to the current numbers for Counter-Strike 2 or the peak of the original Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Nonetheless, the player count has been trending upward since the standalone version was reintroduced.

This number is similar to that of Deadlock, another Valve game that isn’t easily found through the standard Steam search and requires a direct link for access.

Why CS’s Player Count Still Matters

The player bases for Counter-Strike 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive show that Valve’s tactical shooters can coexist on Steam without directly competing against each other.

The original Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike: Source still have active players, continuing the franchise’s presence across multiple generations. The tactical FPS genre as a whole continues to grow, with titles like Valorant available on different platforms and others on and off Steam.

Players choosing between Counter-Strike 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive can now do so based on their preferences for game mechanics, competitive scenes, or nostalgia, without needing to leave the Counter-Strike franchise entirely.

To play the standalone version, users can visit the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive page on Steam directly through a browser or use a direct Steam link.

From there, they can add the game to their Steam library via the standalone page. The game can then be installed and launched separately from Counter-Strike 2.

The standalone version is available free of charge for existing Counter-Strike account holders. Users interested in both games can install them side by side without any conflicts.

How To Access Counter-Strike: Global Offensive On Steam

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is now available as a standalone game via Steam. Valve has not announced any changes to how the game is distributed or discovered on the Steam platform.

The game still cannot be found through the usual search or browse features on Steam. Instead, users will need to use a direct link to access it, rather than navigating through the storefront.

Valve has not commented on the increase in player numbers or shared any plans for new content updates specific to the standalone version.

Those interested in tracking the game’s activity can monitor SteamDB for updated player count charts or follow community channels for potential news.
