What makes business fibre different?
Fibre carries data as light through optical cable. It can provide high capacity, low latency and reliable performance over distance. The commercial service around the cable matters just as much as the technology. A business product may include better support, managed equipment, monitoring, static addressing or defined restoration targets. A low-cost shared product may still suit a small office, while a cloud-dependent operation may need a more strongly managed service.
Start with the applications, not the speed
Count users and identify what they do at the busiest time. Web browsing and email are relatively light, but cloud backup, large design files, CCTV uploads and video meetings can consume substantial capacity. Voice calls are not bandwidth-heavy, but they need stable latency, low packet loss and correct network prioritisation. Ask whether the quoted service is symmetrical. Upload speed becomes critical when staff send files, use cloud storage or work through hosted systems.
Understand contention and service expectations
Two fibre packages with the same headline speed can behave differently. Ask whether capacity is shared, what performance is expected during busy periods, who owns the customer router and where support responsibility begins. Also ask how incidents are logged, support hours, escalation steps and typical restoration arrangements. A service-level agreement should be read carefully: it is a process and performance commitment, not a guarantee that faults can never occur.
Plan the local network
The fibre terminates at your premises, but users still depend on the firewall, switches, cabling and Wi-Fi. An old router or poorly placed access point can make a fast fibre service feel slow. Separate staff, guest and device networks where appropriate, protect equipment with backup power, keep firmware maintained and monitor usage. For larger offices, a site survey is more reliable than adding consumer Wi-Fi extenders.
Build resilience
If losing connectivity stops sales, calls or operations, add a diverse backup. Fixed wireless can be valuable because its last-mile path is different from an underground fibre cable. Configure automatic failover, decide which applications receive priority on the backup and test the process regularly. Remember that routers, switches, access points and phones need power during an outage.
