operation (all those custom-designed pods) and publish tons of drive stats.\u00a0 Their B2 service is also among the cheapest per-GB pricing you can get.<\/p>\n<p>However, their finances have been awful.\u00a0 Their stock has been oscillating between $5 and $10 forever, and since 2019 they\u2019ve never managed to actually earn a profit.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been expecting an announcement that they\u2019ve been acquired.\u00a0 They have $192 million in assets, zero long-term debt, and $26 million in cash.\u00a0 They employ less than 400 people.\u00a0 So for some hyperscaler out there who wants access to their IP or some private equity firm who wants to roll them into a portfolio, they\u2019re pretty attractive.<\/p>\n<p>However, it looks like BackBlaze management has found a lifeline, and it\u2019s a rather creative one.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to sell object storage not to consumers or small business, but rather to clouds:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Today, Backblaze announced a $335 million, multi-exabyte agreement with CoreWeave to deliver object storage capacity supporting key elements of CoreWeave\u2019s storage infrastructure. The agreement spans more than five years.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So let\u2019s assume that\u2019s $335 \/ 5 = $67 million a year.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably not structured quite that simply but let\u2019s use that number.\u00a0 It\u2019d be enough to push BackBlaze into the black.\u00a0 They\u2019re losing about $25m\/year at present.<\/p>\n<p>This deal makes a lot of sense, assuming BackBlaze can deliver.\u00a0 Hyperscalers consume tons of storage and CoreWeave \u2013 which essentially is a middleman \u2013 is probably desperate to improve margins because CoreWeave is also losing money.\u00a0 Supplying storage to one big cloud business is a lot easier than dealing with a million consumer PC backups.<\/p>\n<p>This deal does have a lot of risk:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When I say CoreWeave is losing money, I don\u2019t mean the bush league millions that BackBlaze is losing.\u00a0 CoreWeave is losing\u00a0<em>$1.5 billion<\/em> a year.\u00a0 While they have $55 billion in assets, they also have $50 billion in debt and other obligations.\u00a0 Will long will they be able to pay BackBlaze?<\/li>\n<li>Five years is an eternity in this space.\u00a0 CoreWeave in its present iteration hasn\u2019t been around that long.\u00a0 It was founded in 2017 as a crypto company, but then pivoted in 2022 when it realized it had a lot of GPUs in datacenters it could rent out to AI companies.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMulti-exabyte\u201d is a lot.\u00a0 That could be 2 EB but let\u2019s assume for the sake of discussion that it is 3 or 4 EB.\u00a0 That could be roughly what BackBlaze has on the floor now.\u00a0 They don\u2019t disclose figures, but in 2019 they disclosed 750 PB (or .75 EB).\u00a0 Has consumer back and their B2 business doubled or tripled since then?\u00a0 Let\u2019s say it\u2019s quadrupled to 3 EB.\u00a0 This CoreWeave deal would mean providing 2x or more of their existing storage.\u00a0 If they have that much space capacity, great\u2026if not, this could mean a huge round of capital to provide service, and then to maintain it for 5 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Still, considering the doldrums BackBlaze has been in, this is good news.\u00a0 The market likes it\u2026their stock finally broke $10\/share.<\/p>\n<p>The post BackBlaze Finds a Lifeline: New 5-Year Deal with CoreWeave Announced appeared first on LowEndBox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Share Post Share reddit We\u2019ve covered BackBlaze many times in the past, most recently in April.\u00a0 They\u2019re fun to watch because they expose a lot of the guts of their hardware operation (all those custom-designed pods) and publish tons of drive stats.\u00a0 Their B2 service is also among the cheapest per-GB pricing you can get.
